Family, Friends and Supporters,
We affirm our solidarity with the Black community, to assert that Black Lives Matter, and to stand together as we all endure challenging times.
Plaza de la Raza was founded 50 years ago to address inequities in arts education and the greater society, as well as to aver that our culture has value and is essential to the American fabric. We are not a race, for we are all races, we are not a religion, for we are all religions, but we are a culture, made from the many waters that flow from the tip of Patagonia to the start of the Mississippi. It is our belief, pedagogy and vision that cultural expression through art is our gift to all Americans and celebrating our differences amplifies our similarities and thus brings us closer to each other.
We uphold the rights of the Black community to be fully recognized as equal citizens of our nation, and to live their lives and express their existence without fear of repercussions, to suffer social injustice, or be subject to negative consequences of any kind because of the color of their skin. It is our solemn duty to stand shoulder to shoulder with our Black brothers and sisters and say enough is enough. ¡Ya Basta!
Most of us will never know what it feels like to be Black in this country, but we empathize with the mothers and fathers who have lost their children or anyone who’s lost a loved one. No one is born conscious of skin color, no one is born hating others based on the color of their skin. Racism is taught, it is systematic, it is fed to us subtly.
It is our job to educate ourselves on the movement and call out racism, xenophobia, and colorism within our own culture and communities as well as checking our privilege. We need to take a step back and look at our own biases, our own beliefs and ask ourselves, “where do those opinions and feelings coming from? Are we being fair and just towards others?” It is never too late or too early to start talking about and educating ourselves, our kids, or our families on the racist and discriminatory roots embedded in our country. It is our job to break those cycles, to teach kindness, love, empathy, and all other positive qualities that make us human, that make us care for one another.
Focus all of our energy on what our communities can do standing and working together for justice and peace. Strategize how we can push for reforms that can help all people of color and organize to make them a reality. A people united will never be defeated. ¡El pueblo, unido, jamas sera vencido!
So let us commit to changing the system that thrives on division, fear and hate. Let us pool our energy and fight back to heal this nation that for too long has let the virus of hate infect us all. Plaza de la Raza has a diverse group of staff and leadership, teaching artists, students, parents and families that stand with Black Lives Matter. ¡La lucha sigue! The struggle goes on!

Familia, Amigos y Partidarios,
Estamos escribiendo para afirmar nuestra solidaridad con la comunidad Negrxs , para afirmar que Las Vidas Negras Importan, y para permanecer unidos en estos momentos desafiantes.
Plaza de la Raza fue fundada hace 50 años para abordar la falta de equidad en la educación de las artes y en la sociedad, al igual que para afirmar que nuestra cultura tiene valor y es esencial para la fortaleza y riquezas de este país. No somos una raza, porque somos todas las razas, no somos un religion, porque somos todas las religiones, pero somos una cultura, hecha de las aguas que fluyen desde la punta de la Patagonia hasta el comienzo del Mississippi. Es nuestra creencia, pedagogía, y vision que la expresión cultural a través del arte es nuestro regalo a todo America y al celebrar nuestras diferencias amplificamos nuestras similitudes trayéndonos juntos unos a los otros.
Defendemos los derechos Negrxs, que sean reconocidos como ciudadanos iguales de nuestra nación, que puedan vivir sus vidas y expresar su existencia sin miedo y repercusión, que no sufran por injusticias sociales, o que no sean sujetos a consecuencias negativas de ningún tipo por el color de su piel. Es nuestro deber estar junto con nuestros hermanos y hermanas de la raza negra y decir, ¡Ya es suficiente, Ya Basta!
La mayoría de nosotros jamas sabremos lo que se siente ser negro en este país, pero nosotros empatizamos con los padres que han perdido sus hijos, hermanos que had perdido un hermano, o cualquier persona que a perdido un ser querido. Nadie nace consiente del color de su piel, nadie nace odiando a los demás por el color de su piel. El racismo es enseñando, es sistemático, se nos presenta sutilmente.
Es nuestro deber educarnos sobre el movimiento y llamar la atención a el racismo, la xenofobia, y el colorismo en nuestra propia cultura y comunidades al igual que revisar nuestros privilegios. Tenemos que tomar un paso atrás y ver de dónde vienen nuestros prejuicios opiniones y sentimientos, “estamos siendo justos hacia unos y otros?” Nunca es demasiado tarde o demasiado temprano para hablar y educarnos, educar a nuestros hijos, o familias sobre el racismo y la discriminación los cuales son bases de la fundación de este país. Es nuestro dever acabar con estos ciclos, de enseñar amabilidad, amor, empatía, y todas las otras cualidades que nos hacen humanos, que nos hacen cuidarnos los unos a los otros.
Ay que enfocar toda nuestra energía en las cosas que podemos hacer como comunidad para obtener la justicia y la paz. Ay qué formar estrategias y organizarnos para poder impulsar reformas que ayuden a la gente de color y a que se hagan realidad. “¡El pueblo, unido, jamas sera vencido!”
Ay qué cometernos a cambiar este sistema que prospera en la division, miedo, y odio. Ay que usar nuestra energía para luchar y sanar esta nación que por mucho tiempo ha dejado que el virus del odio nos contamine a todos. Plaza de la Raza tiene un grupo diverso de personal, lideres, maestros, estudiantes, padres y familias que apoyan a La Vidas Negras Importan. ¡La Lucha Sigue!
