“The Last Angry Brown Hat” by Alfredo Ramos

Plaza de La Raza is thrilled to announce the much-anticipated return of “The Last Angry Brown Hat,” a cornerstone of Chicano theater and a stirring reflection of the Chicano civil rights movement. Written by East Los Angeles playwright Alfredo Ramos, this seminal play will take the stage February 21st, 22nd, 24th, 27th, 28th and March 1st at the Margo Albert Theater at the Margo Albert Theatre.

A winner of the 1993 Plaza de la Raza Nuevo LA Chicano Playwrights Competition,“The Last Angry Brown Hat” has received national acclaim, including a 60-city tour from 1996 to 1999.

In 1999, its historical and cultural significance was solidified when the Smithsonian National Museum of American History invited the production to perform for its Latino Heritage program in 1999.

Set in the aftermath of a funeral, “The Last Angry Brown Hat” brings together four Chicano friends who reflect on their lives, their bond, and their shared history as members of the Brown Berets, a powerful activist group that fought for justice and equality during the Chicano movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Through raw, poignant dialogue and moments of humor, the play unearths the struggles, triumphs, and lingering questions faced by those who fought for civil rights in a turbulent time.

This play resonates today as strongly as it did when it first premiered in 1993 reminding us of the sacrifices made during the civil rights movement for equality and dignity.

Why This Play Matters

“The Last Angry Brown Hat” is not just a play—it’s a historical lens through which audiences can explore the struggles and victories of the Chicano movement. Its deeply personal yet universal themes continue to inspire dialogue around race, community, and activism. This new production offers a fresh opportunity for younger generations to connect with a movement that forever changed the course of American history.

This is a story that belongs to everyone—not just the Latinx community. It’s about resilience, social change, and the enduring spirit of those who dared to demand justice.
